This?presentation?questions?the?conditions?of?production?in?the?Chinese?garment?industry?and?the?role?played?by?migrant?workers.?There?are?not?international?migrants?but?internal?migrants?coming?from?poor?rural?areas?to?more?advanced?cities.?They?share?with?the?former?a?desire?for?upward?social?mobility?and?their?exposure?to?discriminations.?The?paper?argues?that,?although?in?China?as?elsewhere,?garment?workers?work?in?difficult?conditions?for?low?wages,?they?are?not?simply?passive?victims?of?an?oppressive?employment?system.?This?contribution?is?based?on?the?trajectory?of?three?siblings,?met?in?Yiwu,?Zhejiang?province.?Their?professional?path?are?related?to?the?characteristics?of?the?industry,?composed?of?a?multitude?of?small?and?medium-sized?family?businesses.
